The citizens of the Gaza Strip have been forced to live in constant fear of terrorist attacks for the greater part of a century. New York – Amazing!

Probably one of the first stops will be the Empire State Building and whilst it may be on every tourists list, that doesn’t mean it is not worth it, especially the view from the top. For others the winner of this little competition is the Rockefeller Center which is a little taller but if you don’t have a clear day you won’t see anything anyway. Huge numbers of visitors have meant it can often be difficult landing at the Statue of Liberty and getting off the tour boat at Ellis Island is often the easier option.

The Staten Island ferry can still be traveled on without cost and can offer excellent photo opportunities of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty; the island is also worth a look and the terminal is a favorite spot for street performers, some are of a professional standard.

If you are spending seven days in New York you’ve got to see the site where the World Trade Center Towers stood, something that changed all our lives. Twin Towers stood on but not one where a photograph would be appropriate.

For those who love to shop there is of course the famous Tiffany’s and Broadway plus some fantastic old discount warehouses worth a look down on the Lower East Side.

The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum will also be worth visiting late next year when it re-opens after a period of refurbishment; once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. For those that are interested in large vessels like planes and aircraft carriers for example, then this is the place to visit with the aircraft carrier – Intrepid; submarines and even a Concorde to name but a few of the craft they have there.

The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep; it contains a great deal of information about the World famous Police Department and you can buy souvenirs too.

Then it is worth seeing some of the older history of New York back when there were huge numbers of migrants entering the city and the Lower East Tenement was where most of them ended up; this is now a museum and a time capsule. There is more history in the City of New York Museum on Central Park which holds exhibitions of the past, present and future. The museum is in a beautiful building which is free to enter but a nine dollar donation is normally given with plenty of souvenirs available.

There is a huge amount to see and do in this city and if you are staying anything less than seven days in New York, you will hardly scratch the surface!

See Where Picasso Lived in Paris

Mention a trip to France and Paris is the first thing that comes to mind for most people. Indeed, it is difficult to think of another city in the world that out does the cuisine, history and culture of Paris. What is really fascinating, however, is the fact Paris is really is a sum of its parts.

We have all experienced Paris in books, movies or other media. If you want to see that image of Paris, one neighborhood is the place to go. Montmartre sits below the Sacre Coeur Basilica and is Parisian through and through.

While most tourists can do without seeing the Eiffel Tower (and paying to visit each level) missing Montmartre would be a lot like missing the Coliseum when visiting Rome. One last windmill left upon the infamous hill seems to tell of a time long past while hinting at the beginnings of a new future.

Montmartre watches over the (once scandalous) Moulin Rouge; the dark streets of Pigalle (Pig Alley to many war veterans); and the Paris scene that was once the subject of many great works of art. While it’s true that this area is a weird mix of souvenir stands and suspicious street clowns, it is worth a saunter.

As often happens with places where famous people once where, Montmartre has a lively collection of businesses trying to sell the past. Junk memorializing van Gogh, Monet and Picasso are to be found everywhere you turn. Ignore it.

Some say that the section called Montmartre is perfect until you exit the famous hill. Others say that the true part of Paris cannot be seen unless you descend from the mountain. No matter what is said individually, there is a collective scream around the globe that adores this Parisian culture clash.

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by the mimes and what have you. Ignore them. Take a moment off to the side to realize you are walking through history. Look around and take in the home where a poor Picasso painted a masterpiece or two.

This is an area that is so powerful, you cannot help but feel the neighborhood soak into your clothes. The smell definitely might! Do not mistakenly attend the Moulin Rouge and think that is all there is. The entire area is the attraction.

Montmartre should be taken as it is in all its wonderful gaudiness. Bold, daring, and dying to be appreciated by the outside world, this part of Paris is what the city of lights is all about. Take a dip into the garish Parisian nightlife by walking through the one section of the town that dares to show some skin.
