Deploy Your Energies on Important, Immediate Assignments and Earn Better Grades

by Dr Marc R. Dussault

Have you ever noticed in your life that the times you were most productive were times when you had the least amount of time to spend, or a deadline to work to that you had to have a project or study finished by.

Do you find it easier to complete your tasks when you are stressed for time and having to push to complete work before the deadline ,than when you have no deadline?

Here are some specific scenarios:

Not important and not urgent. 10% of your total mark for the course is a book report, but it isn’t due for another three months, and you expect to spend only 10-20 hours reading the book and 4-5 hours getting the report written.

You should get started as soon as possible so it doesn’t become urgent.

You really want to avoid letting an important task become an “urgent and important” task. You can easily avoid this type of situation by psychologically giving yourself one-fourth of the time to complete the task, which will result in a faster completion time. Therefore, allowing extra time so that you can review and “polish” the final product into something truly amazing.

Not important but urgent. There is a quiz tomorrow but you haven’t studied anything. It counts for 5% but you need every mark that is available.

You should have made time for this between everything else you were doing. You could have easily avoided all of the stress and anxiety that you have now subjected yourself to.

Whenever you notice that you are in a similar situation, you should focus on your weak points and spend 80 percent of your time fine tuning those points. Spend the rest of your time working on your strong areas.

Important but not urgent. You have a project that is worth 35% of your final mark. It’s due in a month and you estimate it will take you 20-25 hours to complete.

Besides organizing your tasks into realistic groups, you should give each one a time limit and set yourself a target date for completion. Your workload will then be more structured and well-thought-out so that the tasks should be less stressful. Then you can unwind before you again have to get to the focal point of each task.

Important and urgent. Your final exam is in 2 days time and 70% of your final grade depends on it. You have not done enough till now. The amount of new materials to be covered is so great that you are not sure where to begin. You start panicking.

You want to be sure you are spending appropriate amount of time on urgent and important issues that may take more time to resove than some of lifes more mundane problems.

The ideal coping method is to take a more objective look at the issue, and take the time to think it over calmly. There is no situation that can be best dealt with in haste; every difficulty needs some thought put into it, and every difficulty can be better overcome if you plan a little before diving into the situation.

Once you get this fine balance right, and at the same time learn how to make the urgency “work for you” with especially the urgent projects and exams, you’ll truly have a formula that will see you through any exam, project or work related task you’ll ever need to complete.

Don’t Choose the Wrong College; Ask these Five Questions Instead

by Dr. Casper Poodel

Lots of families spend more time shopping for an automobile than selecting a college.

Of course, everyone knows what questions they want answered when they’re at a car dealership. They may be far less certain what to ask a college admissions counselor.

Unfortunately, families are frequently intimidated by the prospect of interacting with college personnel, and are therefore afraid to ask questions even if they have them. For the most part, these people have an unfounded fear of asking “stupid questions” because they have not been through the college selection process before.

Don’t be afraid of asking inappropriate questions. College admissions counselors expect them. Do be afraid of choosing the wrong college because you were afraid to ask a few questions. So, try these questions. And add to them.

1. Describe the kind of student who flourishes at your college.

2. Do students have an opportunity to interact with faculty outside of the classroom?

3. How important is academic success to your students? In what campus activities and events are students most interested?

4. Do interested students have the opportunity to be involved in internships, cooperative education programs, overseas study, service to the community, and/or other special programs?

5. What percentage of students remain on campus on weekends?

After reading these five questions, I’ll bet you’ve thought of several more, including those you consider more important than my five. Write them down now, while you’re thinking of them, and add to them as you think of more things that will help you make your best college choice. In just a few more moments you’ll have taken some important steps toward finding the best college for you.

Good luck.

by Gary Pearson

What do you do for a living? Do you love your current job and employer? Here’s the big question; are you earning the salary that you desire? Well, you know what I mean. Sure, we’d all love to be billionaires, but it simply doesn’t work out that way most of the time. Regardless of how you make your living, it’s common knowledge these days that education plays a major role. There’s just so much competition out there. We all have to acquire those much-desired skills and vie for our spots in the work force. That University degree program has become crucial to earning a decent buck. Did you go to college and achieve that BA or BS? If your answer is yes, then good for you. However, if you haven’t, it’s not too late.

It’s easy to see the benefits of completing a University degree program. For one, you can apply for much better jobs, and therefore better money. In addition, once you have a great job you advance much faster than your non-degree co-workers. Think about that perfect job that you saw in the paper - you’d be a shoe-in for that job if you had your degree.

Employers love to take a glance at your resume and spot that degree achievement. This lets them know that you’re serious about acquiring a decent career, and are able and willing to work hard. After all, if you’ve devoted four or more years to a University degree program, then you’re probably willing to put forth some effort in the workforce.

Once I graduated from college, I was stoked about making my resume. I could actually say that I had a bachelor’s degree. That just feels outstanding. A certain confidence rolls over you when you present your academic achievements.

If you are thinking about going back to school for that all important University degree you should start doing some research. See what programs are available in your area. Just because it’s been 10 years since you were in school does not mean that you are now excluded from attending a University degree program. Those who are willing to do the work will find their rewards in the workplace.

Pyramid phenomena and Angelic Visitors

by Dr. H Noah

The prophet Daniel noted that one of the signs of the last days would be a great increase in knowledge (Dan. 12: 4). Man’s secular knowledge today is, according to some educators, doubling every two and one-half years.

As part of this increase of knowledge, scientists are learning that many of the stone relics of the past, including the Great Pyramid, were more than just simply monuments to appease the vanity of men.

It is a part of the Biblical record that there have been countless visitations by angels who have made excursions to the Earth. The heavenly temple is composed with the celestial family of God who serve as guardians of the secret places; and they are the heavenly priest who direct worship toward the Creator.

So are we to believe that perhaps angels had a hand in the creation of the Great Pyramid and other giant structures which cover the earth? This is only speculation as I know of no one personally who has examined an angel. There are several people who claim alien abductions, and UFO Sightings.

Could there be a connection between UFO, angels, and aliens? I quote Dr. Hynek of the U.S Air force, “I cannot presume to describe what UFOs are because I don’t know; but I can establish beyond reasonable doubt that they are not misconceptions or hoaxes.”

I cannot say without proof that unidentified flying objects are controlled by good angels or bad angels. I really just don’t know. From Biblical standpoint it appears that the only life forms mentioned in Scriputre our those who inhabit the heavens who were created by God

Course Reading Speed Improves Cognition And Comprehension

by Josh Atree

There has been much research on the linkage between cognition and speed reading by a variety of professionals such as educational psychologists, teachers and cognitive science researchers. Recently a study undertaken by researchers from the University of Aberdeen was published in an academic journal, which appears to prove that comprehension is proportionally linked to the course reading speed. This has finally provided statistical data to back up something that researchers have long believed to be true.

Course reading speed has always been believed to help a student to shine at school, but it’s not just an old wives tale. In a large study involving the interview of over 9000 parents, teachers and students, it was found that students with an above average class reading speed, absorbed more of the concepts being taught and were left with more time to revise their understanding.

The results of the study did not completely satisfy the researchers. The head researcher had said that there is a need to go further and analyze the connection between the understanding of educational curricula and course reading speed.

It is assumed by cognitive scientists that there is a critical threshold reading speed, past which understanding is greater than the national average. They refer to this as the breakthrough reading speed and further research into the definition of that threshold limit is vital if we desire to learn more about the relationship.

The speed at which you read is affected by a variety of different things. An early introduction to reading materials and their subsequent availability is a definite way to increase reading speed during childhood. Once set, the speed will generally remain the same throughout life.

According to this study, Children with unique educational needs can enhance their information retention levels with support from teachers and remedial classes. Increasing the child’s reading speed to a point close to the threshold limit will work, so long as there is as much time spent on reading as there is on other remedial aspects.

One area that scientists are considering for future search is exploring “breakthrough reading speed.” For scientists to uncover just how cognition and class reading speed are related, they must discover the threshold level, provide that it really exists indeed.

A Field Of Study That Brings People Into Contact With Nature

by Steve Collins

The field of Conservation shapes a wide number of food needs, crop management and soil. Students interested in earning degrees in Conservation and Ecology must understand such specialized fields as water conservation, forests, wildlife extinction, wildlife management, pesticides, waste management and more. Effective courses should include in-depth environmental case studies that challenge prospective students to examine how ecological concepts apply in the field.

Vocations in Conservation and Ecology often engage spending a good deal of time in the wild. Observing and protecting the purity of natural reserves and wildlife refuges and endangered wetlands could well be part of a potential student’s career. Some graduates may even work in the corporate sphere, working to acquire the funds and the awareness of various environmental organizations.

A wide range of careers that manage, conserve and protect natural resources include such employment opportunities as park ranger assistant, visitor center specialist, biologist wildlife assistant, wildlife handler, nature park specialist, conservation educator, marine life aquarium worker, forestry technician, horticulture aide, environmental lobbyist, grass roots organizer, adventure tour guide, zoological society specialist, museum specialist, and more. The forests and parks of the United States are rich resources, providing stunning beauty and incredible tranquility. A key element of conservation is the effective managing of the resources comprising the forests and harvested woodlands. Graduates of the Conservation and Ecology curriculum are assigned to develop, maintain, and protect the forests of the nation. The logging industry cuts down thousands of acres of forests each year, supplying the ostensibly greedy hunger for paper, and it is the conservationist who must protect the remainder of the forests.

Those who may be employed by state and local governments, or who may be contracted by such municipalities to clear away underbrush and garbage from park trails, roadsides, and designated camping areas. Some conservation specialists and ecologists may be contracted to preserve various facilities and campgrounds. Other forest and conservation workers work in forest nurseries, sorting out tree seedlings and discarding those that don’t meet the standards of root formation, stem development, and condition of foliage.

A few conservation and ecology students may find work on tree farms, where they plant, cultivate, and harvest many different kinds of foliage. The responsibility of students vary with these kinds of farms. Those who work on special farms, such as farms growing Christmas or decorative trees for nurseries, are accountable for shearing treetops and limbs to shape the growth of the trees under their care, to increase the density of limbs, and to recover the shape and health of the trees.

No doubt, this is a field of study that brings a vast number of people into contact with Nature and the pleasures of the great outdoors.

Want To Get A Teaching Job Abroad?

by Elizabeth Wolfenden

Teacher jobs abroad are more on demand than ever. However, this kind of teaching is not for every person out there. Depending on the program that you will teach with, there will be some challenges that you will face.

Right before I got my secondary teaching job I was able to get some great experience by teaching English in Russia. Different programs have different requirements, but the one I was involved with was very easy as I didn’t have to have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) certificate. This is because it was through a volunteer program.

If you are looking for a more stable or permanent position, you will want to get certified. The demand is huge all around the world for teachers who are ESL certified. You will be able to get a job very quickly pretty much anywhere you want to go.

Depending on the teaching position you want to get you will probably need a bachelors degree and certification in TEFL/ESL. With the right certifications you can go pretty much anywhere.

Before you get on that plane, make sure you have a few more things covered first. Make sure you study up on the language and can speak it at least well enough for basic communication and getting around. Also learn about the culture of the area you are moving to.

Realize that you will be eating most likely very different food and become familiar with different customs. In some cases you may experience some culture shock, which incorporates your body getting used to a different way of eating, climate, altitude, etc. You may get sick for a little while, including diarrhea or constipation.

To help make the transition easier on yourself, make sure to bring some familiar items from home that will help you feel more comfortable.

Teaching jobs abroad can also lend to great travel opportunities. You may want to choose your travel destinations based on the sites that you want to see.

If you don’t have certification yet, you may want to test the waters and try out a volunteer program overseas, like the Peace Corps. Some colleges and universities also offer great oversea teaching experiences.

Avoiding the Mistakes that Sink College Freshmen

by Dr. Casper Poodel

Do you know how may students drop out before their second year of college? At some colleges, it’s 60% of the class. Here’s how you can be in the other group.

1. Remember that college is far more demanding than high school. If you forget where you are, you might not be there for long.

2. It’s not just something grandma made up…scientists have proven that you need at least eight hours of sleep to function properly. Get less and it can hurt you, no kidding.

3. The strongest beverage you should drink during the week is coffee.

4. Drinking excessively, even on weekends, is not “part of college life”, as some folks would have you believe. Heavy drinkers frequently fail to complete college.

5. Beware of procrastination. Keeping up with your assignments, especially your reading and your major papers, will make your life less stressful and result in better grades.

6. A good lap top can be your best friend. Take notes on it, revise notes on it, and use it to write at least two drafts whenever you have a major paper. Use jump drives to back up everything, and to make it easy to print out your work wherever there is a printer.

7. Frequently, students get off to a bad start, or even find themselves dropping out of college after carrying overly ambitious academic loads. Choose your courses wisely until you feel comfortable with the academic demands of college and have enjoyed some success.

8. Working while in high school may not be a big deal, but college will demand more of your time. Thus, you should not, under any circumstances, work more than 20 hours a week.

9. Lots of freshmen try to “suck it up” instead of getting help with academic, social, or emotional problems. Don’t be embarassed. Don’t try to tough it out. Get help immediately.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, the intellectual ability of Albert Einstein is not required to be successful in college. But, you do have to make (mostly) good decisions. The ten suggestions above are a good starting point.

Ashworth College - a Gateway To The Fashion Industry

by Steve Collins

Pencil skirts, A-line gowns, V-waists, peek-a-boo blouses. Have you ever wondered why the tides of fashion seem to favor one cut over another? Why is one article of clothing suddenly de rigueur, while another perfectly decent one falls from grace? The secret machinations of taste and style are shackled to trends and kitsch. For the curious there is but one choice: to enter the belly of the fashion beast.

The best way into this brave new world is to get your papers in order. Short of a degree from a prestigious fashion design academy, the aspiring fashionista should pursue a degree in fashion merchandising. This will pave the way to reasonably exciting careers in specialty stores, boutiques, national department stores, discount chains, wholesale apparel dealers and clothing design studios. A graduate will have to endure a hectic lifestyle: constantly on the go, meeting new clients, fabric venders, seamstresses, models, buyers, and more. This will entail long hours, constant travel, and incredible amounts of stress. The sobering reality is that success or failure depends on the quality and attractiveness of any given collection and any given season.

The best fashion merchandising programs include rigorous courses designed to familiarize students with the various types of retailers, direct marketing strategies, and consumer buying trends. It is essential that fashionistas understand the psychology of consumers, as well as the sociology of buying, not to mention the history of fashion as it relates to popular purchasing trends. It’s a reoccurring word for a reason, and a word can make or break countless fashion houses and boutiques: trends. Understand the trends, and you can look forward to a long and prosperous career in fashion.

With more than a million retail stores and boutiques in the United States alone, a highly motivated and skilled fashionista has the pick of the litter when it comes to making a decent wage. They enjoy careers as apparel buyers, personal shoppers (for executives and celebrities), specialty managers, manufacturer representatives, fashion directors, and fashion stylists. The key is not to get bogged down into any one role, but to understand the totality of this fickle industry.

The projected earning power of a degreed fashionista, according to Salary.com, is somewhere in the range of $28,000 and $60,000, depending on location. The U.S. Department of Labor claims retail managers and merchandisers have the potential to earn a medium salary of $72,000. High-end boutiques in New York, London, Paris, and Los Angeles will pay more handsomely, of course, than stores in Middle America, but making the right impression always includes having the right degree. Take the right degree, a nose for trends, and mix in the X factor of determination, and you have all the building blocks for fashion success. It’s a tremendously competitive industry and navigating its murky waters is not for the faint of heart or thinned-skin. Take heed now, before you embark, and make sure you’ve got a degree that can open the right doors.
